Need separate article for spontaneous natural flames
[edit]Aba Spontaneous natural eternal flames should be discussed in a different article because they need geological explanations. Mdmcginn (talk) 21:14, 18 October 2013 (UTC)
- Explanations can be added. Neither large enough for a separate article nor significantly separate. Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 06:44, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
Flame in Miami
[edit]If im not mistaken, there is an eternal flame in Miami, FLorida, for one of the Kennedys (JFK?)
- I'm on vacation right now, and went to Arlington National Cemetery. John, Jackie, and Bobby Kennedy are all buried there. --Evildevil 00:06, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
- You may be referring to The Torch of Friendship in downtown Miami, dedicated to JFK. It's listed. --173.233.174.234 (talk) 07:40, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Well... in WWI article, they say "arc de triomphe eternal flame first eternal flame since the vestals" Well... at least in the catholic church, there is one in every churches. Even if its only an electric false candle on an uninterruptible power supply ;-).
I came here looking for more information on the church connection, growing up in Catholic and Lutheran churches, all who had such flames. I was hoping to learn the origin of the flame since it's my understanding that when a new church is founded, the flame is brought over from another church to keep some original flame going. I was hoping to learn when this started or if there's any way to know with any sort of certainty how far back this goes. I added "Many churches (especially Catholic and Lutheran) feature an eternal flame on or hung above their altars. When a church is founded, the flame is passed from another church and the candles are regularly replaced to keep the original flame going. " but I actually don't have any citable proof, so feel free to edit or delete as appropriate. James Lamb jamesatlambdashfamilydotnet, 06/08/07
I am on the discussion page, am I not ? I hope I am not editing the real article ? :-)
- Yes, you are, and there's no reason not to edit the article if you can improve it! -- Nunh-huh 03:25, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Is there actually an eternal flame at the Pont de l'Alma? I known there's a sculpture of a flame there, but that's not quite the same thing. - Nunh-huh 03:25, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)
What determines a symbolic eternal flame? There is one where I live, but I don't want to just slap it up there and be insulted when it has to come down.Attitude2000 20:26, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Centennial Flame
[edit]The Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill in Ottawa is not an eternal flame. It is routinely extinguished and relit. - Montréalais 06:53, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
- I don't really agree that it is not an eternal flame. It seems to fit the definition in the first paragraph in my opinion. I tried to add explanatory text to the article. Normally it's only unlit for about a one week maintenance period twice a year. The flame at John F. Kennedy's grave does get blown out by the wind, but it has an automatic relighting system. (I know that's not quite the same thing.) Actually, the Centennial Flame is shut down currently for morethan 3 months for a major renovation. Canadiana 02:23, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- It is not only unlit once or twice a year; it is shut off during inclement weather as well. I've frequently seen it out when in Ottawa. (The first paragraph says that an eternal flame "burns constantly.") It's not an eternal flame in practice, nor in avocation -- it is not designated an eternal flame. It's not an eternal flame, it's just a flame. - Montréalais 17:31, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Brisbane
[edit]Err... there's an "Eternal Flame" in Brisbane. 210.49.247.160 09:38, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- Now added. Canadiana 02:23, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Alberta Legislature
[edit]The Alberta Legislature just placed an Eternal Flame in front of the Legislative Building in Edmonton for fallen officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (Grizzwald 00:18, 19 July 2006 (UTC))
- I don't know anything about this, but feel free to add it in. This would also require a sub-heading for Canada if it was added. Canadiana 02:23, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

American bias?
[edit]Why are all the places listed here given with the name of a country, EXCEPT when it's somewhere in the USA? Is America the "default" country now? I get doubly confused by Georgia - surely that's a country by default, before it's a state? I can't find any general Wikipedia guidelines on this, so sorry if it's a common error/policy/imperialist plot throughout Wikipedia! 88.107.188.226 13:02, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, there is an American bias in this article, and many other ones. Some of the problems are that there are many Americans, and a high percentage of Americans have good Internet access, and viewpoints of non-Americans are harder to find in the United States. The Wikipedia guidelines are to try to get rid of such biases. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias and even Wikipedia:Neutral point of view.
- To Americans, "Georgia" is probably several hundred or even several thousand times as likely to refer to the state than to the country. I would guess that a significant percentage of Americans have never even heard of the country Georgia, and don't even know that they are showing a bias when they assume readers will think of the state.
- I have added a warning about the USA-centric nature of the list and tried to internationalize it a little. Please help by adding material from other places. One reason the USA had its own heading is that the countries without their own headings do not have more than one entry in the lists. Country names are now all sub-categories of continents. Canadiana 01:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- When it's under a "United States" heading, there is no need to mention the country again. I have checked that all countries are treated consistently now. Any country with two or more examples listed has its own sub-heading at the end of its continent's listings. Canadiana 02:07, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
First Eternal Flame?
[edit]I could be mistaken but I think claiming that the first eternal flame being dedicated to Kennedy might be incorrect. Isn't there an eternal flame in memory of Gandhi at the Raj Ghat? If so, and if it's dedicated in his memory, it's almost 20 years prior to Kennedy's.
Eternal flame in Sarajevo too?
[edit]Isn't there an eternal flame in Sarajevo too? It is dedicated to the liberators of Sarajevo in the second world war.
South America
[edit]There is another eternal flame in the Flag Memorial of the city of Rosario, Argentina. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryuujin Ravex (talk • contribs) 14:24, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Hiroshima Not An "Eternal Flame"
[edit]The Flame of Peace in Hiroshima's Peace Park is NOT an eternal flame. It is a flame meant to be extinguished when all nuclear weapons are abolished. Cynical minds may say that it will be an eternal flame with such a purpose however, the flame remains different from the rest for this reason. I think it should have mention outside of the list with others, like the Diabetes flame in Canada. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.92.209.227 (talk) 06:39, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Europe
[edit]There´s a eternal flame in the main entrance of the Olympic Museum at Lausanne, Switzerland where the International Olympic Committee headquarted his offices. Russia
[edit]There's much more Eternal Flames in Russia. I'd rather say, there is at least one almost in every big city. Short list http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%92%D0%B5%D1%87%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B5_%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%BD%D0%B8 109.106.137.191 (talk) 109.106.137.191 (talk)
- I would love to add some of them, but as I don't read Russian, it is more difficult to find good, unbiased, English-language sources for their existence. If we could find some, we could add them. Rvanarsdale (talk) 15:08, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Mine fires as eternal flames?
[edit]This should be clarified. There are many active mine fires across the world still burning. See Coal Seam Fires.

Flaming Geyser State Park
[edit]The flame at Flaming Geyser State park has stopped burning due to depletion of its resources. I am unsure whether it should be moved to the extinguished flames section, as that appears to contain no natural flames. Perhaps a note by the item stating that it is no longer burning or removal from the list would be more acceptable. BreadTheThird (talk) 02:02, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
